It is simply impractical to list all of the reasons why you cannot own a rhino as a pet, as there are quite a few. Humans have not domesticated any rhinoceros species in any way. The last male of the subspecies died in 2018, and the two remaining females are not healthy enough to reproduce. Unfortunately, the northern white rhinoceros is in a much more dire situation. Poaching is a serious problem to the species, and both poaching and demand for rhino horns are currently increasing. Because white rhinos are one of the largest grass-eating animals, they have to eat a lot of grass to survive. They prefer eating shorter grasses and fresh growth. Southern white rhinos live in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya, and Uganda. Nowadays, the only known northern white rhinos live in zoos. The two subspecies were once divided by their ranges, with the northern subspecies in central Africa and the southern subspecies in southern Africa. These large mammals live only in Africa, primarily southern Africa. These mud holes help the rhinos cool down and protect their skin from sunburn and insect bites. Regardless of habitat preference, white rhinos seek out areas with mud holes. Grasses are the white rhino’s favorite food, and they cannot live in habitats without it. They prefer this habitat to more heavily forested areas because grass grows more densely. This species of rhinoceros lives primarily in savannahs and grasslands. Groups of rhinos, called “herds,” or “crashes,” can have as many as 14 animals. Other rhinos are solitary, but female white rhinos live in groups. Social Rhinos – Another way white rhinos differ from other species is in their social habits.Pointed lips in other species are better for browsing on leaves and branches, but not good for eating grass. This trait gives the rhinos better grip while grazing for grass. Browsing – Unlike their black rhinoceros cousins, white rhinos have flattened upper lips. They are less aggressive than other rhinoceros species, and have poor eyesight. In fact, white rhinos in particular are easier to hunt. Horn Hunt – This fact, however, does not keep poachers from hunting rhinos for their horns.Rhinos “horns” consist only of keratin, with no bony core. True horns have a bony core with a sheath of keratin around it. Rhino “Horn” – While many universally call the pointed growths on rhinos’ snouts “horns,” they are actually somewhat different.They have a number of unique traits and adaptations that help them survive, learn more about these adaptations below. White rhinos are quite interesting creatures. The average male also weighs around 5,000 lbs., but can weigh up to 7,900 lbs. The Southern white rhinoceros' front horns are is on average about 60 cm long, but can grow up to 1.5 metres. This involves fertilising Fatu’s eggs using frozen sperm from deceased male Northern rhinos and then transferring them to a surrogate Southern white rhino at a later date, in the hope that a new Northern white calf will eventually be born. Scientists are involved in a complicated project to save the Northern white rhino subspecies. The last male rhino, Sudan, died in 2018. The two remaining Northern white rhinos are called Fatu and Najin and are both female. Northern white rhinosĪs of 2021, there are only two remaining individuals of the other subspecies of white rhino, the Northern white rhino. Their name comes from the Afrikaans word “weit” which means wide, referring to the shape of their mouth. There is actually no colour difference between the black and white rhinos species, despite their names.
