It's what Shelter series developers Might And Delight call a TMO-tiny multiplayer online. ![]() I'm pretty sure I also don't like MMOs anymore, but Book Of Travels isn't one. Certain benchmarks, accomplishments, or in-game choices could visually 'evolve' the character in slight but noticeable ways.I've had my eye on Book Of Travels for a while, and lately every time I see it I think of Ed saying he doesn't like MMOs anymore. Players could even use this idea to play with and develop new subtleties within the existing colour lore.ģ. Identify parts of each form's costumes which are 'secondary' and when a colour skill is used, let the player select a secondary colour. A reasonable balance would need to be struck because it's a small team and they can't invest vast timeblocks creating unique art assets for all kinds of equipment, as much as we might wish they could.Ģ. In addition to weapons and off-hand items, I would prioritize backpacks. However, like I alluded to in the OP, I think that most further options for character expression and ownership would have to come in-game. Deadfire implemented this and personally I loved it. (Just to reiterate here, I agree with your suggestion re: ownership in spirit, I'm just trying to game out how it could be implemented.)Īnother parameter that could be added at creation, which would have more impact than additional colour or style options without, afaik, risking any clashes with lore, would be character posture. at cuffs, belt, etc) and options for clothing texture might be possible. Options for lining or detail colours (e.g. So the remaining space for clothing customization, at least at creation, is small. Which leads us to two: the writers have provided the game world with a well-thought-out system of colour symbolism, relating not simply to lore but to factions as well. For one, you probably know that control over the colour of clothing is currently provided through in game skills, which cost knowledge points, so part of the idea here is that some customization is a luxury that comes at a cost - and potentially serves a purpose. Regarding clothing colour, any customization options in creation would have to be limited and specific. What are there, about 15-20 options for each? I don't think that spending more dev time there would add to the feeling of ownership that you identified, and which I agree needs improvement. I thought the quantity of styles and colours was more than sufficient, personally. ![]() Just this small handful of things would add an enormous feeling of ownership over our characters, I think. The option to alter the default color of our clothing would be cool too. Even just choosing from a few different hoods and maybe a handful of visuals options for the backpack would be nice. If I had any suggestions beyond obvious things like more hair and beard styles, I'd say it'd be nice to be able to alter a few details of the clothing. It's basic, but basic is fine for this game. Originally posted by Lunarhound:I really like the character creation UI. ![]() I think perhaps some equipped items should impact in-game appearance more than they currently do. I don’t know that a solution lies in character creation – again, I appreciated what they added and I don’t want a billion sliders for every minute detail. I can appreciate all of that, yet I still want a bit more here. This may be for lore reasons, multiplayer gameplay, and even for scope reasons. The devs have probably aimed to strike a balance between customization and the recognizability of the forms. The game is so graphically interesting, and the NPCs are so varied, that you expect more visual expressiveness in the player character than we’re getting, even with this addition. (One comment I would offer is that the paper doll on the left looked ragged, though that’s perhaps because it’s in beta.)īut, even combined with in-game appearance customizations (outfit colour, carried items), I feel like an opportunity is being missed. It’s ’workmanlike’ – not highly elaborate – but offers some meaningful new options to individualize your form. I mostly liked what I saw, and I’m looking forward to seeing choices reflected in-game. You can now alter size, hairdo, facial hair, hair colour, and skin colour (in addition to the options that already existed). For everyone who has played around with the character customization in the current beta iteration: any comments?
